Petition to halt freshwater use for hydrogen production

The Petition was submitted by Innes Community Council following research into the perceived environmental impact on the River Spey following a planning application to build a hydrogen plant drawing 500 litres of water a day from the Spey Valley near Aberlour.

Scottish Parliament Petition PE2159: Halt the production of hydrogen from freshwater. It takes 11 litres of water to produce 1 kg of hydrogen, which will propel an artic truck for 6 miles. Plans are to abstract fresh water from boreholes in river valleys. Some schemes hope to abstract more than 500,000 litres of fresh water a day. All studies report that water abstraction reduces the water table and river levels and affects the environment over large areas away from the boreholes.
